Your Innkeepers, Gordon and Susan Church retired from the stress filled fast-paced corporate world and returned to Susan's home state of West Virginia and to her hometown of Philippi.

They envisioned their retirement years as being peaceful and quiet, trout fishing, hunting, hiking and just siting on the front porch swing and letting the hours slip away.  Gordon bought Susan a trout fishing pole and reel for Christmas just before they retired so they could go fishing together.

In the spring of 2007, they heard that the National Historic Landmark Crim Peck House was for sale.  The house sat behind the courthouse and covered almost a whole block.  The house had a stonewall that surrounded it like a moat.

As a little girl, Susan walked to school across the iron bridge over the Tygart River and passed this wonderful old house sitting majestically behind the courthouse.  Susan remembers that a little old lady sat on the porch and waved or smiled as the schoolchildren walked by.  I always wondered what it looked like inside that big old house.  Many many years later, I knew when I walked through the beautiful double front doors.

As soon as I walked through the front door, I knew,  that I was home, a peace settled on my heart, this house has such a wonderful warm feeling to it, says Susan.  Gordon agreed but  I saw my trout fishing days floating away.

We spent over 7,000 hours bringing her back to her Victorian glory days. Not a ceiling, wall, floor or woodwork was left untouched, says Gordon. While we were working, many people stopped by and wanted to see the house as they too always wanted to see what the house looked like inside.

So, we decided to open the house as a Bed and Breakfast, at least for a few years, that way we can share this wonderful home with the public and so far, everyone who passes through her double front doors falls in love with this home.

This past summer we had to fix a water leak requiring digging up the yard and putting in new pipe, of course, right through Susan's new flower garden she put in last summer.  While we had the yard dug up and a mess in the basement we decided to upgrade our heating system.

Another large spruce tree had to be taken down to protect the Carriage House as well as much needed trimming to the old apple tree.  In the process we discovered several porcelain dish pieces and one old bottle.

As it goes with old houses, all these projects were a surprise.  Our planned maintenance of painting the carriage house and the front porch had to be put on hold until spring 2011.  Gordon mamaged to get all 12 hand turned porch posts stripped and painted this summer and Susan continued work on the gardens.

But we will be glad to put aside our paint brushes and hoes and spend some time on the porch with you enjoying a leisurely afternoon or evening on the porch swing.

We are now ready to retire retire and spend those days fishing and enjoying our grandchildren.  We have placed this wonderful house and the carriage house up for sale and hope that someone will buy her that will love her as we have and as has everyone who has walked through those beautiful front doors.
